The outgoing year has been quite exciting and full of drama. Several events happened during the course of the year which sent the internet on a frenzy as well as got bloggers really busy.
There have been pockets of scandals here and there, subs, severe backlash and continued rivalry and comparison amongst artists.
Now we are going to shine the spotlight again on some of those moments that evoked the loudest scream and reaction on the Nigerian music and entertainment landscape.
1Dammy Krane Goes To Jail For Credit Card Fraud
This was arguably the biggest scandal in the Nigerian music industry in 2017. Former Hypertex Digital music star Dammy Krane was arrested in far away Miami for credit card and grand auto theft. Photos of his mugshot flooded the internet. TwitterNG community added more salt to injury as Dammy Krane became the butt of jokes. The scandal has become a scar which the singer finds it difficult very to cover up.
2P-Square Breakup… Again
This was one of the loudest moments in the Nigerian music industry, when Africa’s number one duo Psquare inevitably part ways. An attempt at breaking up was salvaged last year but however, 2017 was the last straw that broke the camel’s back. Peter and Paul went their separate ways after several internal squabbles and social media fights. They are now officially known as Mr P and Rudeboy as solo artistes.
3Banky W’s Engagement & Wedding To Adesua
Banky W and Adesua
One of Nigeria’s most eligible bachelors and professional fine boy Banky W called it quits to bachelorhood. The Nigerian king of R&B threw the Internet into a big frenzy when he disclosed his engagement to actress Adesua. The whole process from his engagement to the white wedding in South Africa was highly publicized with the popular hashtag #BAAD2017. Mr Banky mistakenly put his wife’s bare bottom on display on social media.
4Davido Roped Into Death Of His Friend Tagbo
So everyone just woke up and the news of Tagbo’s death was all over the blogosphere largely because Davido was linked to the demise of his friend. All hell was let loose on Davido when actress Caroline Danjuma dragged him into the situation. Severe backlash followed, however, the MOBO award winner was able to clear his name from the accusations.
5Eedris Abdulkareem Vs Colleagues
The veteran rapper made more headlines in the outgoing year by calling out younger colleagues than his music. Eedris called out Timaya and tagged him as ungrateful, he also had very unpleasant words for 2Baba. The ‘Jaga Jaga’ crooner did not have any kind words for younger colleagues especially while granting interviews.
7Mr Eazi Vs Nigerians
The ‘Skin Tight’ crooner suffered severe backlash for certain things he said while granting interviews. The triggered the ire from Nigerians when he said Nigerian artistes are copying his style of music to make quick hits. The ‘Accra to Lagos’ singer said this during an interview with Capital Xtra. The TwitterNG community did not hesitate to drag Mr Eazi on hot coals. Lesson learned for Mr Eazi… don’t try Nigerians on the internet.
8MI Abaga Fumes Over Nigerian Hip-hop
Veteran and elite rapper M.I. Abaga courted some attention when he went all critical of the current state of Nigerian Hip-hop. The Chocolate City boss remarked that South African rappers were up the food chain and bossing the genre in Africa. This supposedly led MI to drop the feisty ‘YRSFUYL’ which triggered several clap back and responses.
9Burna Boy Vs Mr 2Kay
The year didn’t pass away without Burna Boy being mentioned in one controversy or the other. The ‘Yawa’ crooner was having an almost scandal free year before being accused in the robbery and battery of Grafton Entertainment singer Mr 2Kay. The latter was robbed and beaten in his Eko Hotel suite after performing at ‘Buckwyld n Breathless’. Burna boy was declared wanted by the police over his involvement in the crime, and subsequently his end of year concert has been postponed. A resolution is still pending.
10Kiss Daniel Vs G-Worldwide
Oluwatobiloba Daniel Anidugbe who is popular as Kiss Daniel had his first major career controversy and that had to be with his former record label. The ‘Yeba’ singer had moved on from GWW to set up his Fly Boi Inc. The transition was almost smooth and seamless until GWW decided to drag the singer to court for boycotting his 7 years contract. The case is still unresolved, but has been very messy with dirt flying from both sides.

Wizkid subs Davido and Tekno: The star boy sent subliminal messages for his arch rival Davido with the now popular emoji while calling Tekno a duck face.
Skales Threatened To Beat Up Osagie: Baseline Music lead act Skales felt slighted by Osagie Alonge of Pulse NG who said he copied Olamide’s concept for his ‘Agolo’ music video.
Shatta Wale Disregards Wizkid: Ghanaian dancehall artiste stirred up the dirty waters of controversy after he said he doesn’t see Wizkid as much of a superstar. Shatta Wale went off calling out other Nigerian artists while giving out vain threats.
Davido Fires Manager Kamal: DMW honcho David Adeleke aka Davido started out 2017 with a bang. The father-of-two courted early attention in the year when he suddenly fired his manager of 4 years Kamal Ajiboye. There were several insinuations from the DMW team that Kamal was allegedly diabolic and that he jinxed members of the record label. He was fired on a controversial ground.
